Electrical licensing examination schedule
The Department of Labor and Industry maintains a regular examination schedule
for the licenses listed below at its
offices in St. Paul.
Exam guidelines and scheduling instructions
Examination day details
All examinations for the following license classes will be scheduled online:
- Before anyone may schedule an examination date, the individual's
examination application must be approved by DLI. There are no exceptions. Dates
scheduled by individuals without written approval of their application will
be rejected and not scheduled. They also may be reported to the department's
enforcement unit for disciplinary action. (Individuals retesting after a
failed exam must apply for another examination date.)
- Approved applicants must check the available examination dates when
applying for an examination date.
- The
examination schedule is updated daily during the workweek. The
scheduling status for each examination date was current as of the date
and time posted on the report.
- Examination dates in greater Minnesota are infrequently scheduled,
but are added when scheduled to the available examination dates.
- Approved applicants must complete and submit the
Electrical Examination Request Form, which requests the following
information:
- Current mailing address.
- Last four digits of Social Security Number to verify with
application.
- E-mail address to confirm receipt of the examination request.
- First choice for an examination date.
- Second choice for an examination date.
- Identification of the type of examination being request (must
match application).
- Upon submission of the Electrical Examination Request Form, a
reference number will be issued to the submitter that confirms DLI has
received the e-mail request. DLI advises the applicant to print and save
the reference number as proof that DLI received the e-mailed
request. (Note: DLI's receipt of the e-mailed request does not
indicate, imply, or mean the requested dates are confirmed. The
reference number only indicates that DLI received your request.)
- DLI will assign each applicant's examination date in the date
and time order was received.
- Once the examination date is assigned, a confirmation letter is
mailed to the applicant that identifies the date and location and
any specific instructions for that examination date and site.
- Cancellation of an assigned examination date may be done via
e-mail at dli.exam@state.mn.us. You must include the last four digits of
your Social Security number, so CCLD can validate the cancellation
request against your application information.
- Rescheduling an assigned examination date may be done once by by
the applicant. However, a new application and examination fee will
be required to reschedule a second time.
- Preparation for examination is very important. Download
DLI's examination study guide.
- Applicants that fail to appear for a rescheduled examination, as
well as applicants that fail their examination must submit a new
application, including a new application form and examination fee
before being approved for examination or reexamination.
- All examination types are allotted five-and-a-half (5 1/2) hours to
complete.
- Examinations begin at 8:15 a.m. and end at 1:45 p.m.
- Applicants should arrive at the examination site by 7:45 a.m.
- Applicants arriving after the examinations start will not be tested.
- A picture ID must be presented by all applicants when they appear for the
examination.
- Food and drink are permitted during the examination.
- Once the testing starts, attendees may not leave the testing area until the exam
is turned in.
- Not permitted in the testing area include: cell phones, personal code books or
exam prep materials.
